mvtc_logo5Masters track and field athletes from across the country convened in Olathe, Kansas last week to compete in the national championship. The New England association had a strong presence at the meet, with a number of USATF-NE teams competing. While there were many highlights worth noting, the most impressive team performance came from Mass Velocity Track Club, which placed fourth out of 120 teams.

A leading contributor to that team, Flo Meiler (79, Shelburne, VT/Mass Velocity) brought home a basket of medals in the W75 division. Her marks included: pole vault 6-0; long jump 8-9.5; 80m hurdles 21.70; 200m hurdles 52.03; discus 64-5; and pentathlon 3434.

Then we had Katrina Geurkink (Hanover, NH/Thor’s Stone AC), who had four wins in the W50 division throws: hammer 34.45m/113-0; shot put 11.09m/36-4.75; weight 10.83m/35-6; and discus 31.82m/104-4. Additionally, Mary Roman (Norwalk, CT/Mass Velocity) and Barbara Jordan (So.Burlington, VT/Mass Velocity) had two wins each: W75 hammer 23.26m/76-3, weight 10.22m/33-6 and W75 100, 17.75 and triple jump 6.02m/19-9, respectively.

Also making the top step of the podium were Rebecca Connolly (Wilmington, MA/Mass Velocity) W45 pentathlon 2643; Buzz Gagne (M65, Concord, NH/Twilight Throwers) M65 javelin 154-8; Warren Graff (Merrimack, MA/Mass Velocity) M65 300 hurdles, 54.93; Jerry LeVasseur (Brunswick, ME/NE 65+ RC), M75 10,000m 1:03:53.86; Tim Morse (Hingham, MA/Twilight Throwers) M55 weight throw, 55-11; Carl Wallin (Lebanon, NH/Thor’s Stone), M70 shot put 44-3.25.
