With sixteen past members of the USA Mountain Running team on the starting line along with an international champion, the 20th annual Mt.Cranmore Hill Climb had a field worth of the national championship designation on Sunday. Contesting an up-and-down 4.6 kilometer loop multiple times (depending on the division), the top two males and one female were assured guaranteed spots on the US team in the White Mountain Milers sponsored event. The 2007 edition of the race was an attempt to emulate the WMRT course in Switzerlandand and race director Paul Kirsch was able to mimic the ascent and descent pretty easily and frankly, brutally on the downhill!
As a selction race, the top 2 US men and top US women earned an automatic spot on the World team, and
Women contested two loops, and favorite / frontrunner Anna Pichtrova of the Czech Republic did not disappoint as the six time Mt.Washington champion won in 46:05. The heated battle for the top US finsisher was won by Anita Ortiz of Eagle CO, a mother of four who made her unprecedented fifth Teva US Mountain Running Team by clocking 49:05, almost a minute up on Christine Lundy (CA) (50:04) who in turn bested last year's top US finisher at the Worlds, Nicole Hunt (Montana) by 45 seconds; it was Hunt's first mountain contest with both up and down segment (contested internationally in odd years, with even years being up-only) and both still has a chance to be selectd by committee. New England's best, Kelly Lusk (CMS/Belchertown MA) clocked 53:05 in fourth. Dorcas Wonsavage (CSU) was second overall master and New England champ in eighth overall.
The men's challenged continued for a third lap, and was a see-saw battle between Ricky Gates of Colorado and New England ace Paul Low (CMS/Belchertown MA)
as Gates attempted to gain on the uphill what Low would eat up on the down (averaging 25% grade downhill). The Rocky Mountain man was just able to hold off the 2004 US champ by 10 seconds for his first USA title (1:02:48-1:02:58) with Josh Ferenc (BAA/Acworth NH) a relatively distant third (1:06:44)
While not a seletion race for the junior men and women, several runners were there to add the race to their resume with hopes of committee selection. The 175 finisher total was the races' highest ever; more race reports are at www.whitemountainmilers.com.
