1997 USATF New England Mountain Running Series
FINAL STANDINGSSponsored by USATF New England, Powerbar, Saucony
Eric Morse of the Central Mass. striders completed his sweep of the USATF New England Mountain running series with a convincing win at the Pack Monadnock 10 mile race. Morse, a member of the USA mountain running team at the world championships last year, took the series with wins at each of the races. "I hope this earns me a spot on the team this year" commented Morse. With the third fastest time ever run at Pack, along with the third fastest time ever at both Kearsarge and Wachusett, it would seem his chances of making the team are excellent.
On the women's side, last year's champion Margo Webber decimated the field with superb performances at each of the races. Her score of 242 points was topped by only 4 men.
A couple of notes on the series. Point totals for scoring the series are based on a percentage of the winners time. For example if the winner ran 60 minutes, and you ran 120 minutes your score would be 50 points (60/120=.50).
A large percentage of racers ran all 3 events; of the racers at Mount Kearsarge, almost half of the field went on to complete the series. Forty seven runners completed all three races, up 50% from last year. The list of "Mountain Goats" follows the standings.
Winners of the random draw (open to runners completing all 3 races and holding USATF membership) for guaranteed entry into the 1998 Mt Washington race were: Leland Chisholm, Ed Liebfried, Dick Miller, Deborah Sheedy, and Lucien Trudeau.
Thanks to USATF-NE for sponsoring the series, along with Powerbar (who graciously donated product), and Saucony (who again provided T-shirts for award winners). Thanks also to the race directors for being part of the series and making it a success. Participation in the series went from 503 in 1996 to 566 in 1997.
