Three Local Winners at US Junior Nationals
Denton TX, June 23-24

A trio of throwers earned spots on the USA junior national team at the USATF Junior National Championships last weekend. The meet, open to athletes who will not turn 20 during the year, combines the best scholastic and collegiate athletes in the age range who have achieved strict qualifying standards.

Shot putters Laura Gerraughty (Nashua NH) and Jeff Chakouian (Seekonk MA), both New England high school record holders, won their specialty; Chakouian's winning 59'10 1/4" with the 16 pound college/open shot was only bettered by one New England collegian this past season, while Gerraughty remained undefeated and followed her win with a third place in the hammer. Hammerman Josh McCaughey of Rhode Island's Bishop Hendricken HS continued his dominence of the ball-and-chain with a big 204'9" with the open implement.

Silver medals were earned by Katy Johnson (hammer), Justin Easter (steeplechase), and Ben Shorey (10K Racewalk).

The top two finishers in each event are eligible to compete in a pair of international junior matches in Canada in July, and are may be selected to compete in the North American/Central American/Carribean championships in August as well as the World Junior Championships in Chile in October.
