McGlone Fades As Vogel Takes 10,000 Meters

Thanks to his own preserverance and to a stomach disorder suffered
50 yards short of the finish line by veteran Fred McGlone, 18-year-old
Teddy Vogel, wearing the colors of the Navy V-12 program at Tufts,
captured the 29th annual 10,000 meter cross country New England A.A.A.U.
championship run over the hills and dales of Franklin Park yesterday afternoon.

The youthful Watertown runner who only a week ago erased the Tufts Oval
four-mile cross country record, and at 17 annexed the N.E. junior three-mile
title, raced home the winner by six yards when McGlone doubled up in pain
with the victory so near, and then recovered too late to retain the short lead
he had maintained over Vogel for most of the distance.

In addition to taking the coveted championship, Vogel earned himself an
extra 24-hour furlough from his station at Tufts.

Nineteen of the 21 starters crossed the finish line. One of hte two failing
to go the distance was Johnny Kelley, still bothered by a leg injury received
during last Sunday's 30-kilometer championship run. Kelley was forced to call
it a day after going a little under two miles.

Three teams were entered in yesterday's event, bot only one,
the North Medford Club, had the necessary complement of five runners
at the starting line ... This would ordinarly eliminate the team prize
under the New England A.A.A.U. regulations, but due to war conditions the
committee plans to meet shortly to discuss the possibility of awarding the
trophy and medals to Fred Brown's runners from North Medford.
